Message from the Board – Jeff Alt, President

April showers bring May flowers, but they also bring fire ants.  You know those mounds of dirt that appear in your yard and along the roads overnight after a rainstorm. If you are not aware, you should know that the fire ants that build those mounds can be highly toxic and dangerous to your health.  Many people and dogs are highly allergic to the venom injected by the ants when they bite.  Please use caution when walking and walking your pets.

Speaking of walking, you should always walk facing traffic.  This allows you to see passing cars before they get to you.  This is just the opposite of riding a bicycle.  You should always ride with the flow of traffic. WALKERS and BIKERS, when a vehicle approaches, PLEASE, go to single file along the side of the road. Staying side by side is dangerous for you and the driver.

ACC Corner – Tom Wright, ACC Chairman

acc Flying the United States Flag

With the coming of May, which ends with Memorial Day weekend, it is a suitable time of the year to review how to properly display our national flag. There are some rules and customs from Title 4 U.S. code pertaining to the display and use of the Flag. Below are parts that most pertain to home display of the flag.

a)      It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset. The Flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

b)     The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is used.

c)      Any additional flag or pennant must be displayed lower than the U.S. flag.

d)     Never allow the flag to touch anything below it such as the ground, plants, or water.

e)      On Memorial Day, the flag should be displayed at half-mast until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.

f)      A flag that is worn, ripped or otherwise in poor condition must be properly retired. Reach out to our local American Legion that will accept old flags and retire them respectfully in their next flag disposal ceremony.

Each of the colors on the flag has a meaning:

Thank You,

Carolina Shores POA.

Recreation and Social Activities – Sue Hensler

Happy Hour in the Park

Just a reminder to save the date. Happy Hour in the Park is every third Friday of the month. The next one is May 17. Come join us under the pavilion from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. It's an opportunity to reconnect with old and new friends. BYOB and don't forget an item for the Sharing Table. Hope to see you there.

Memorial Day Weekend Picnic

The Carolina Shores POA annual Memorial Day Weekend Picnic returns on Monday, May 27. Tickets will be distributed by members of the Recreation Committee from Monday, April 29, through Thursday, May 2, Saturday, May 4, for those who work and May 6 through May 8 at the POA clubhouse (not the office) from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Due to parking constraints, there is a limit of 325 tickets, so get yours early - first come, first serve! (No tickets will be issued after the deadline, and no one will be admitted without a ticket.) Tickets are complimentary to POA residents only. Due to the continued growth of our neighborhood, we will not be able to accommodate outside guests at this event.

As in the past, this year’s event will be catered by Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N’ Bar-B-Q of Shallotte. BYOB and any sweet dessert that you might want for yourself. The time will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds, by the pool. Food will be served from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Also, as a friendly but important reminder, if you pick up tickets and subsequently find that you are unable to attend, PLEASE return them to the POA office or call to cancel by May 10. In order to continue providing our residents with this activity, paid for with recreation funds, it is important that we only be charged for meals contracted with the caterer. After the final count is given, we are obligated for that amount. It is in all our interests not to pay for “no shows”.

Your Fob/card is needed for entry to the pool. Everyone entering the pool area must sign the register kept by the pool attendant. Pool use is for POA members in good standing and their guest. Guests must be accompanied by a POA member.

LIGHTNING RULE: The pool will close if thunder is heard. Everyone will be required to leave. The pool will re-open 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.

Alcohol and glass containers are not permitted in the pool area. Rules for the pool are posted on the entry gate and also on the Pool Bulletin Board. They are also available from the POA office and on the CSPOA website.

Also, do not park in the grass area on the courts side.

POA Library – Sue O’Reilly

Please do not leave books that do not meet our guidelines for donation in our library. The guidelines list is attached to the table in the library and has been written about in many issues of the POA bulletin. In brief, only popular fiction and non-fiction, not older than 10 years, and no "how to" or craft, religious, or sport books; especially, no damaged, dirty or yellow paged books. Do not clean out your bookshelves and dump them in the POA library. Be discriminate if they are in bad shapediscard them! Volunteers are there to shelve books and keep our library in order. They are not there to deal with those books that do not fit our criteria for inclusion. Your cooperation would be most appreciated so we can continue this amenity. In the future, when donating books, puzzles, etc., please leave your name and phone number with your donation. Thank you.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

Stack of booksSixteen members were present for a fascinating discussion of our April reading selection, Carolina Moonset, by Matt Goldman. Set in Beaufort, South Carolina, the novel which according to one reviewer was “an engrossing story about family and memories, both golden and terrible, and secrets too dangerous to stay hidden forever”. It had many twists and turns and led our readers to look at the story from a number of different perspectives. The surprising twists and turns of the plot kept most of us guessing until the final pages.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m. in the large room of the POA clubhouse. We are looking forward to discussing Go as a River by Shelley Read.

Carolina Shores Quilters Group – Gloria Gustavson

We would like to extend an invitation to all past, present and future quilters to come and join us. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the Carolina Shores POA clubhouse. Any questions, call me at 910-297-0066.

 Garden Club – Happy Mullen

A close-up of a garden

Description automatically generatedMembers and guests who attended the April meeting were treated to a presentation and demonstration by Sherry Godfrey, a potter, former garden designer and avid gardener. Sherry explained the Japanese Arts of Kokedama and Kusamano and demonstrated how to design and plant each of them. Kokedama is a style of planting in which plants are placed in a ball of dirt that is wrapped in moss and held together with thread. Kokedama may be hung from tree branches or hangers, or perched on plant stands or saucers. Sherry displayed many of them on her own lovely pottery. Kusamano are potted arrangements of wild grasses and flowers. They are plants in shallow pots and are often used as companion plants for bonsai. One of Sherry’s examples included miniature mungo grass and a very tiny iris.

The annual scholarship luncheon will be held at Brunswick Plantation at noon on May 8 with a cash bar opening at 11:30. Four scholarships will be awarded to deserving West Brunswick High School graduating seniors. The winning ticket for the quilt auction will also be drawn. Hopefully it will be a lovely day and we will be seated on the patio.

New members are always welcome at the garden club. The meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the clubhouse, and annual dues are $10. Meetings always include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. This year the club is also raffling a quilt. Tickets are sold at every event and the winner will be chosen at the May luncheon. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.
